Faith based organizations are religious groups set up to provide services to the needy. Many of these programs focus on rehabilitation, whether it be from drugs and alcohol, or prison. But their services can range from elderly care to humanitarian aid. Any Georgia family can get help and advice from these Georgia organizations. The state of Georgia allows faith-based social service providers and other Georgia family faith organizations to compete for government funding. These Georgia organizations are there to provide compassion and offer a level of care that the government Georgia organizations cannot provide. A Georgia family can receive advice and services from one of the many Georgia organizations. Georgia has even added the Day of Faith and Faith Collaboration Day to the calendar. These faith-based Georgia organizations are helpful for any Georgia family, but also stir up controversy in some communities, considering Georgia’s constitution states that no money should be taken from the public treasury to aid any faith-based Georgia organizations.
Georgia’s Constitution states that “no money shall ever be taken from the public treasury, directly or indirectly, in aid of any church, sect, cult, or religious denomination or of any sectarian institution”. This part of Georgia’s Constitution places an even higher standard than the actual First Amendment in the United States Constitution for faith-based organizations. The Governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, proposed his Faith and Family Services Amendment, which would add just 12 words to the beginning of Georgia’s Amendment. It would add the words “except as permitted or required by the United States Constitution, as amended”. Under his new Faith and Family Services Amendment, the state Constitution would allow faith-based Georgia organizations to practice their services. This means any Georgia family or citizen can seek help from a faith-based Georgia organization. These organizations care for children, the homeless, elderly people, people with addictions, ex-prisoners, the mentally ill and other needy people. A Georgia family can even take part in volunteering for these faith-based organizations, including Catholic Social Services, the United Methodist Church Prison Program or the Georgia Baptist Homes. One of Georgia’s most important faith-based initiatives is the prison programs.
Georgia has the sixth largest prison system in the nation. The state has 47,000 inmates, with 16,000 being released back into communities each year. Georgia offers faith-based services to all inmates. These programs offer vocational, educational and substance abuse programs to inmates who are willing to participate. Any Georgia family can volunteer and devote their time to these inmates as they prepare to re-enter society. Volunteers undergo training with these faith-based Georgia organizations. After training, volunteers are able to assist inmates with receiving their GED, conducting worship and prayer services, spend time in prison libraries and even mentor inmates. Georgia family members and friends can all participate in these services.
Faith-Based Prison Programs are not the only initiatives offered to the citizens of Georgia. Many Georgia families and citizens are in need of help, and faith based organizations are there to assist with issues that the government can just not help them with. These services are full of compassion and faith and can be a great deal of help for people in need.
