Mike Jacobs has been on the outs with Democrats almost since he got elected and starting opening his mouth and pointing his voting finger. He hasn't had the support of the "status quo" of the party for some time...the Bobby Kahns and Dubose Porters of the world...and for a long time those against the status quo were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, or so it goes. But this session, Jacobs voted for the Speaker (again) and the rules (again) and then went on to vote for Peachcare cuts and to bring back payday lending not once but twice.

Now only a small band of Jacobs associates will defend him and rarely at that. Democrats around the state and metro area have their sights (and sites) set on him in a primary for his house district, which Decaturguy and others have pointed out isn't the swing district lean Republican land that some of his supporters try to paint it as. Even if they might be impressed with Mike's dealings with the Republican leadership they didn't send him to the Capitol to gut Peachcare and bring back Payday lending (among other bad votes).

His house district is a 50/50 partisan battleground (that still leans moderate/liberal on issues) divided between the Southern (and Jewish) Toco Hills area that leans Democratic and the northern sub-Dunwoody ITP areas that lean less and less Republican each year but still tilt to the R side. David Adelman (D) represents the Southern end of Mike's House District in the Senate (where Mike currently lives) and Dan Weber (R) represents the mostly Dunwoody/North DeKalb north end of the district.

So, those of us who have been wondering how Mike Jacobs plans to continue on as a Republican (as he hinted in his CL Golden Sleaze Acceptance Speech) may have found our answer: He's moving to a different Senate district where it is heavily rumored that the incumbent Republican is retiring, but he'll maintain residence for the 2008 session in his current House District.

To those of us wondering why Jacobs has been such an out and proud supporter of Dunwoody even though he doesn't live in the proposed city and none of his house district is in it (and his district, in unincorporated DeKalb is probably slightly hurt by Dunwoody incorporation) now we have our answer.
